One-time Jersey gambling kingpin Nick Ferraro (Raymond Burr) is holed up at the Bay of Naples, avoiding the authorities. Meanwhile, a gangster named Thompson (Charles McGraw) offers small-time professional card player Dan Milner (Robert Mitchum, fifty grand to fly into Morro’s Lodge—a remote Mexican resort—and await orders. On the way, Milner meets a smoking hot heiress named Lenore Brent (Jane Russell). Once at the resort, he rubs elbows with a cavalcade of eccentrics, including a calculating wolf named Myron Winton (Jim Backus, who has his eye on the young wife of another vacationer, a writer who enjoys playing chess against himself, and Lenore’s lover Mark Cardigan (Vincent Price), a movie star and avid hunter. Trouble’s a-brewing, though, when Ferraro’s yacht arrives at Morro’s and the gangster’s real plans for Milner—a switcheroo double-cross—begin to come to light.
